Applications in molecular biology research
Phages are used as gene carriers in molecular biology research, many of which are used to study bacterial genetics. Transformation is the phage-mediated process of gene transfer in bacteria. In specific transformation, some specific phages, such as phage l, transport only certain genes from the donor to the recipient.
