AMEBIC LIVER ABSCESS

Amebic liver abscess is rare in the United States except in those who have travelled to/from tropical areas with poor sanitation. The causative organism is Entamoeba histolytica . The presentation, which may occur years after travel, includes RUQ pain, fever, and hepatic tenderness.

Detection of a space-occupying liver lesion with positive serology is diagnostic.

Treatment is antibiotics. Drainage is rarely necessary.
