RAYNAUD DISEASE VERSUS PHENOMENON
Primary Raynaud phenomenon (Raynaud disease) typically occurs in young women as episodic small artery vasospasm in the extremities, nose, or ears; it results in blanching and cyanosis of the fingers or toes upon stress or (more commonly) expo-sure to cold. The pathogenesis may involve CNS and intravascular factors.
The secondary Raynaud phenomenon is caused by arterial insufficiency secondary to an underlying disease such as scleroderma (CREST).
