Ataxia: symptoms and causes
The cerebellum central structures (eg, the pupa and the villi) coordinate movement with the muscle through longitudinal motor pathways. Damage to these structures leads to ataxia and lurching.
Description
Ataxia refers to an imbalance of posture when the patient is standing upright, moving head and body (eg, staggering posture). The patient may ask for help to maintain an upright position.
Causes
Often met
Cerebellar infarction.
Cerebral haemorrhage.
Alcohol.
Medicines (eg: benzodiazepine, lithium, phenytoin).
Less common
Scattered stiff fibres.
Mass lesions (eg, tumour, abscess, AVM).
Arnold – Chiari malformation.
Near-tumor cerebellar degeneration
